The CARL Search Party Presents: Basic Search Strategies

The CARL Search Party Presents: Basic Search Strategies In-Person

The Ike Skelton Combined Arms Research Library (CARL) Search Party, the library's Reference Services team, conducts weekly presentations. On Nov. 13 in Room C131 starting at 1300, the team will present for the eleventh time on the following topic:

Basic search strategies to include overviews of CARL webpages, databases, etc.

The target audience will be Command and General Staff College students, especially those writing the MMAS thesis or SAMS monograph and perhaps struggling on how to start their research, and the Fort Leavenworth community at large. Students who previously filled out a reference service request form (i.e., orange sheet) at the Reference desk and are waiting for an appointment are especially encouraged to attend; Reference Service team members will be there to assist with your topic.

Participants will be encouraged to bring their personal laptops, iPads, smartphones, etc., to help further their learning and understanding as they can actively follow along on their devices.

To register, navigate to https://carl-army.libcal.com/ and select the relevant “The CARL Search Party Presents:” hyperlink for the specific session that suits your time and interest.

Seating is limited to 20 participants in Room C131; therefore, interested students are encouraged to reserve a spot. Those students who failed to make the initial list can still attempt to attend the presentation; they will be placed on a waiting list after they have placed a reservation.

Audience interest and participation will ultimately drive this and future presentations, which will be conducted every Wednesday starting Sept. 4 in Room C131 starting at 1300. Future presentations could include more in-depth research- or information retrieval-related topics (e.g., how to use Wikipedia pages to your advantage when expanding the breath of your sources) that might prove beneficial in your research. Future presentations could also include product demonstrations from the likes of NewsBank, Military Periscope, Jane’s, the government-sponsored Protected Internet Exchange (PiX, https://www.pixtoday.net), and CARL’s Digital Library (http://cgsc.contentdm.oclc.org/cdm/).
